The Health Effects Of PFAS

If you’ve heard about PFAS, you probably have questions. We don’t blame you! After all, this term is getting bandied about quite a bit lately, but there’s not always a lot of explanation about what PFAS are, what effects they may or may not have on the human body, and what you can do to limit your exposure to them.

If you’re concerned about PFAS or you have questions, keep reading. You can also call the South Jersey water treatment experts EnviroSafe Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning & Water Treatment if you need more detailed answers.

What Are PFAS?

PFAS is short for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances. These are man made chemicals that have been used for over 50 years in everything from nonstick pans to cosmetics to foams that firefighters use to put out certain types of blazes.

Over time, these chemicals have leached into the water supply. They aren’t present in high concentrations everywhere, but they are there across the country. You can also get exposed to them if you use products that contain them or eat food packaged in PFAS.

What Are The Health Risks Of PFAS Exposure?

There are many studies that suggest there may be health risks related to PFAS exposure at high levels, especially for babies and young children. However, these studies are not standardized when it comes to what level of PFAS may be dangerous or what the chemicals might cause at certain levels. It’s important to keep this in mind when you hear that PFAS may negative affect:

  • Liver enzymes
  • Cholesterol levels
  • Vaccine response
  • Kidney and/or testicular cancer
  • Birth weight
  • Blood pressure in pregnant women
  • Fertility
  • Asthma
  • Immune system function
  • Thyroid function

More studies are needed to determine whether PFAS actually cause health problems and in what concentrations. However, many people are already worried about them, even though these studies are in process or haven’t been started yet.
