Did you know that a dirty air filter can make it a lot harder for your air conditioner to do its job and may even make it hard for it to cool your home? If yours is dirty, change it and see if that fixes your air conditioning problem. Even if it doesn’t, it’s a good idea to change your filter regularly to avoid future issues.
Before you call in a professional, make sure the circuit breaker that controls your air conditioner hasn’t been tripped. If you have a fuse box, make sure the fuse hasn’t blown. If you’re not sure which one controls your A/C, look for labels in the box or just make sure that they are all “on” and not “off”. If one is “off”, turn it back on and see if that helps. If this happens often for your A/C, you may still need professional help.
Some furnaces also have a switch that can be flipped off. It most often looks like a light switch but is located on the furnace itself. If this gets flipped, your furnace fan won’t turn on and your air conditioner won’t cool your home. Check it, too, before you call in the pros.
Make sure your thermostat is set to COOL and not to HEAT and that the temperature setting is where you want it. You may also want to check any recent programming changes to make sure nothing went awry there. These problems are especially common in homes with small children (who like to press buttons) or when you switch from heat to cooling in the spring or early summer.
Ensure that all of the return and supply air vents are clear, not blocked, and have not accumulated too much dust and debris inside them to be useful. You may have to move furniture, carpeting, drapes, and more if they are keeping your system from getting the fresh air it needs to function optimally.
Have dust, dirt, and debris collected on or inside your air conditioning unit? This can make it hard for the unit to work because they function as insulation, keeping the air warmer than you want it to be. Clean it out yourself or call in a professional to have it cleaned so it can cool well again.
